Human Systems Engineering Dept. Manager (Johnson Space Center)


The incumbent is responsible for the work performed in the Human Systems Engineering Department. They serve as the primary customer interface for the SF division chief and deputy division chief as well as appropriate division chiefs in the Engineering Directorate. They provide technical oversight of the Task Order managers within the department. May also serves as the KBRwyle administrative manager for KBRwyle TO managers within the department and for other staff as required. Performs both strategic and tactical planning for meeting performance goals and resource allocation.


  • Responsible task and project performance with the department

  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Responsible for application of and adherence to appropriate policies and processes

  • Negotiate with other DM for access to resources to support integrated projects

  • Responsible for personnel technical performance

  • Conducts annual appraisals of direct reports and performs any required personnel actions

  • Ensures contract performance, cost, and schedule goals are met

  • Maintains succession plans

  • Ensures contract wide management policies and procedures are effectively implemented

  • Enable integration, collaboration, and innovation

  • Support the documented Areas of Emphasis with resources, plans, and expertise as required

  • Conducts and prepares annual self-evaluation

  • Provide oversight of TO managers and ensure work within the department TOs is planned, resourced, and managed appropriately - Provide oversight for projects spanning multiple TOs

  • Implement lessons learned and best practices

  • Identify corrective and preventive actions and drive those to closure

  • Compile and present charts for the monthly contract TCSR

  • Participates in PMR and SA/HHPC Leadership meetings as well as the resource forecasting meetings

  • Administer, mentor and develop assigned personnel

  • Responsible for compliance with KBRwyle’s Safety, Health and Environmental Plan and all safety policies and procedures of the Company, including reporting of safety violations or potential violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel

  • Responsible for compliance with KBRwyle’s Quality Plan

  • Know and adhere to Company policies, procedures and work rules and demonstrate a strong work ethic

  • Maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company

  • Responsible for completing all assigned training



  • BA/BS degree with 15 years technical/management experience

  • 2 plus years TO manager experience

  • Managed a complex organization with 50 personnel

  • 10 years of experience in task and/or project management (in excess of $1M annually)

  • Relevant skills in crew safety, human performance, human spaceflight, flight operations medical operations and engineering

  • Comprehensive knowledge of disciplines within human health and performance and how to apply appropriate expertise within human spaceflight Programs


  • Specialized training in project management is highly desired

  • Two plus years HHPC Task order management experience (i.e. pricing, estimating, variance analysis, procurement, subcontracts, customer reports) is highly desired.

  • Experience developing, reviewing and analyzing NASA and contract financial data

  • Specialized training in areas of safety (VPP) and quality (ISO)

  • Familiarity with KBRwyle personnel, policies and procedures

  • Familiarity with NASA policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to deal with difficult people and challenging situations

  • Demonstrated ability to deal with projects or issues with competing priorities



  • Proven ability to lead highly skilled technical workforce to produce products that meet quality, safety, performance, cost, and schedule requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, project leads, section personnel, customers, and with contract colleagues is essential.

  • Ability to attain and maintain respect and confidence of the customer and contract personnel. A close, cooperative customer interface is essential.

  • The desire and ability to seek and capture new business opportunities. Must be open-minded to new ideas and new ways of doing business, willing to aggressively pursue new opportunities, and flexible enough to adapt to a rapidly changing technical environment.

  • Develops strong teams across multiple disciplines and companies

  • Self-starter; initiates and follows through with no supervision
