Description

The Space Science Mission Operations (SSMO) Project requires Systems Engineering support for assessing on-orbit performance of the missions and to identify, prioritize, and monitor tasks to help ensure mission success. The System Engineer will work with members of the Flight Operations Team (FOT), the spacecraft engineering team, the instrument engineering team, the Principal Investigator (PI), and others as required.

As a member of the SSMO Systems Engineering Team, you will provide support to SSMO missions by:

  • Investigating causes of spacecraft anomalies and assess possible corrective actions

  • Studying spacecraft telemetry for signs of system degradation

  • Developing utilities and tools to make spacecraft operations more efficient

  • Performing medium-term studies to update parameters used by spacecraft hardware and/or software to reflect the current state of operations or to improve system performance/accuracy

  • Providing, as requested by the NASA customer, assessments of flight operations processes and procedures

  • Updating or improving high-fidelity models of spacecraft

  • Analyzing close approaches with space debris, and assessing/communicating collision risk

  • Providing systems engineering-based assessments of proposed systems, processes, and software

Qualifications

BS Degree in engineering or a related discipline plus 12 years of experience performing flight dynamics operations for spacecraft in various orbits, including performing orbit determination and product generation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with SSMO spacecraft operations

  • Expertise writing scripts in MATLAB

  • Experience using and/or creating Kalman Filters for estimation

  • Comfort communicating technical material to a variety of audiences

  • Proven track record of learning highly technical information quickly

  • Proven track record of analyzing complex systems

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise running and changing Simulink models

  • Experience modeling or estimating spacecraft attitude

  • Experience analyzing space debris conjunction risk

  • Experience with spacecraft sensor calibration

  • Experience and comfort with communicating with NASA mission directors

  • Past experience analyzing spacecraft subsystem performance

  • Experience with spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC)

ThThe successful candidate shall possess or be able to obtain NAC-I clearance.
